Recognizing the strategic importance of biodiversity in sustainable socio-economic development and to honor its commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity, Morocco implemented a national strategy and action plan in 2004 aimed at the protection of its biological heritage with a view to its conservation and sustainable use.

The ^10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. In its decision X/2, the COP urged Parties to implement this Strategic Plan through the revision of national biodiversity strategies based on this plan constituting a flexible planning framework.

To this end, Morocco has revised its national biodiversity strategy through a participatory process of developing biodiversity plans and strategies. Below is the national strategy for the period 2016-2020.
