National assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Morocco
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development - Department of Sustainable Development has launched the national assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Morocco, the objective of which is to strengthen the foundations of available knowledge in relation to biodiversity and provide a critical analysis of the available information, intended to inform decision-making.
This assessment is also part of the respect of Morocco's commitments both nationally and internationally.
Indeed, COP 14 at the CBD asked Country Parties to consider undertaking national assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services. For its part, IPBES, in its regional assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services for Africa, identified the lack of national biodiversity data and encouraged countries to undertake national assessments.
The development of the national assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Morocco aims to determine the assets and opportunities presented by Moroccan ecosystems as well as the threats to which they are exposed. The objective of ENBSE is to strengthen the science/policy link on biological diversity, ecosystem functions and ecosystem services, and it will provide an opening for the updating of the National Biodiversity Study.
