Khenifra National Park

Located between the provinces of Khenifra and Ifrane, the Khenifra National Park is the most recent in Morocco. Its creation, carried out in 2008, came in response to the economic and environmental importance of the Middle Atlas region, as well as to the urgency of the threats to its natural resources.

Although the region already contains two national parks, namely the Ifrane NP and the Eastern High Atlas NP, as well as more than 16 SIBEs, it proved necessary to support the protection of these existing sites by creating a large protected area encompassing both the Ifrane National Park and a large part of the Eastern High Atlas National Park and the surrounding ecosystems.

This National Park is distinguished by several characteristics, namely its fundamental ecological role for a large part of the country, being a main water tower, the presence of ecosystems of global importance, in particular the Atlas cedar forest, and the presence of a species that is a typical symbol of the Mediterranean (the cedar).

The Khenifra National Park is home to a very varied vegetation where the most important cedar grove in Morocco is mainly located with formations of holm oak, zen oak and maritime pine. These forest formations, often on relief, alternate with assylvatic open spaces and humid meadows constituting real lawns in spring. These areas may be dotted with bouquets of oxycedar or thuriferous juniper, hawthorn, or other shrub species. Moreover, cedar and holm oak remain the most dominant plant formations (90% for Ifrane and 60% for khenifra).

The territory of this protected area contains a remarkable wealth of wildlife and represents a very exceptional potential, due to the availability of food, water and the proximity of favorable habitats; and which must be considered as one of the main assets of this area.

This richness is reflected in the presence of endangered species in mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians such as: the panther, the striped hyena, the royal eagle, the monkey... etc. The area is also home to several municipalities including in particular the wild boar, the partridge gambra, including the wild boar, the partridge gambra, the thrush, the gambra, the thrush, the hare, the fox, the jackal, the hyena, the nocturnal raptors, the monkeys... etc. The area is also home to several municipalities including in particular the wild boar, the partridge gambra, the gambra, the thrush, the gambra, the thrush, the thrush, the hare, the fox, the jackal, the hyena, etc. ducks and waterbirds, the pigeon, the turtledove.
