Protected Area
Talassemtane National Park
Covering an area of 60,000 ha, this national park covers the eastern end of the limestone ridge that shapes most of the Rif mountain range, from Ceuta to Assifane. This territory offers the most beautiful natural shows in the Kingdom, where stone and tree, rock and forest, immense viewpoints and deep gorges combine closely to create a landscape of rare quality.
The park contains the only Moroccan fir trees, the last witnesses of an ecosystem that is unique globally and is now in great danger. There are also more than 239 plant species, including a large number of endemic ones such as the Atlas cedar and the black pine.
The park is a refuge for more than 37 species of mammals, the best known of which is the magot monkey that lives in caves. More than 117 species of birds have been counted there, the most spectacular of which are the bearded vulture and the golden eagle.
