Protected Area
Sebkha Bou Areg
This site corresponds to the largest Mediterranean lagoon on the southern shore, which is separated from the sea by a long dune cord 1 km wide interrupted by a marine opening and located between the Cap des Trois Fourches and the Cap de l'Eau. Its particularities lie in its double supply of fresh and salt water, its specific geomorphology, as well as its landscape diversity, with a plain anchored behind the Gourougou and Beni Bou Ifrour mountains, and the Kebdana massif.
The site is home to a remarkable flora: Limonium cymuliferum, endemic Algerian-Moroccan, very rare in Morocco and fairly well represented in the site, Atriplex semibacata and Limoniastrum monopetalum, rare in the country and with a very restricted distribution in the site. It is also an area of choice, feeding and rest for the Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii and for four species of nesting birds: Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), Dwarf Tern (Sterna albifrons), Elegant Avocet (Recurvirostra avocetta), Mocking Gull (Larus genei)
