Beni Snassene

Beni Snassen is a mountain massif culminating at 1532 m in Ras Fonghal. It is the most important relief in the region offering the only high quality forest landscape for the entire province from an altitude of 300 m.

At the site level, there are caves and chasms in karstified limestones representing cultural sites of prime importance as a prehistoric settlement (“Taforalt Man”, relating to one of the very rare surgical trepanations performed in the Neolithic period that allowed the survival of the subject) (cf. vol. Prehistoric Sites).

As well as there is the presence of a high quality river Oued Zegzel which has its origins in the vicinity of Taforalt. The only permanent source is in this village itself, it is captured and flows in artificial (polluted) canals, with a low water flow of less than 2 liters per second, it arrives at the bed of the Zegzel at the level of a waterfall, near the Pigeon Cave. The water arrives there already hot (17°C at 8:00) and quite loaded with organic matter. The waters of the waterfall are lost into the ground less than 200 meters further downstream, the stream then becoming temporary.
