Argan groves
The argan tree (Argania spinosa) is an important characteristic of the Moroccan Macaronesian sector, a sector physionomically and floristically singular given its obvious affinities with the Canary Islands, in that it is marked by a hot or temperate winter, a consistently high humidity of the air and a high frequency of mists. Its current populations cover nearly 828,300 ha. They are often old coppices or deciduous trees, with or without shrubby undergrowth. The main companion species are: Periploca laevigata, Senecio anteuphorbium, Senecio anteuphorbium, Launaea arborescens, Warionia saharae, Acacia gummifera, Rhus tripartitum, Rhus tripartitum, Withania frutescens, Euphorbia officinarum subsp. Beaumierana and subsp. echinus, Cytisus albidus, Ephedra altissima, Tetraclinis articulata.
The associated fauna is varied: 60 species of Arthropods have been recorded. However, in the Tafinegoult argan grove, following a defense of 6 years following a general cut of argan trees, there is today a most remarkable fauna parade. From the point of view of Amphibians and Reptiles, 20 interesting species are present, including 8 endemic to Morocco: the Brongersma Toad (Bufo brongersmai), Gecko with prickly eyelids (Quedenfeldtia moerens),, Acanthodactylus moerens,, Busack's acanthodactylus (Acanthodactylus busacki), Seps with numerous scales (Chalcides polylepis), Seps mionecton (Chalcides mionecton), Moroccan Orvet (Ophisaurus koellikeri) and Moroccan ashy Amphisbenus (Blanus tingitanus). We also note the Cobra (Naja haje) and the Striking Viper (Bitis arietans).
As far as avifauna is concerned, 17 native, endemic or rare or endangered species are present, including the very rare Singing Around (Melierax metabates), Raptor Eagle (Aquilal rapax belisarius), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). Mammals are very well represented with 8 interesting species including the porcupine, the genet, the gloved cat, the Caracal lynx and, above all, the Cuvier's gazelle (Gazella cuvieri; around sixty individuals in 1994).
The argan tree is the subject of a rehabilitation and planting program. It is after the target and the result of this program (Source the website of the Department of Agriculture):
