Cedar Trees
Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) is Morocco's noble forest species, appreciated for its economic and biogeographical values. Cedar groves, with a total area of 131,800 ha, occupy a prominent place in the Moroccan forest landscape. They always occur in forest, generally with a rich and very heterogeneous floristic sequence, which may be dominated by herbaceous species, shrubs or trees: Quercus rotundifolia, Q. faginea, Juniperus thurifera, Juniperus thurifera, Ilex aquifera, Ilex aquifolium, Ilex aquifolium, Cytisus battandieri, Cytisus battandieri, Cytisus battandieri, Cistus laurifolius, Daphne laureola, Crataegus laciniata, Ribes uvina. a-crispa, Berberis hispanica, Bupleurum spinosum.
In the cedar groves of the Middle Atlas, more than 260 species of Arthropods and 30 species of nesting birds have been recorded, which is one of the highest proportions of sedentary bird species of all Moroccan forests.
Our cedar groves are unfortunately seriously threatened by a number of pests, including the dreaded Processionary (Thaumetopoeapit yocampa), the Cedar Moth (Acleris undulana), various species of bark beetles (Blastophagus piniperda, Scolytus numidicus,...).
