Toubkal National Park

The Toubkal National Park, created in 1942 on 38,000 ha, is located in the central part of the High Atlas, between the N'Fiss valleys in the West and that of Ourika in the East (31°05'N-07°50'W). This is the portion that corresponds to Adrar n'Dern (mountain of mountains). It is in fact an area that offers the highest peaks in North Africa. It is the best explored, the most accessible and the most picturesque in the entire High Atlas.

Toubkal National Park is individualized by its particular and original characteristics:

Geomorphologically, the jagged or subhorizontal ridges, with a rigorous relief, consist almost everywhere of ancient eruptive materials, very acidic: andesites, rhyolites and granites. Its northern flank shows an area of permotriasic highlands made up of sandstone and clays. The main peaks of the Park, located on the watershed, are heading east: the Tazarhart Plateau (3995 m), Ouenkrim (4089 m), Toubkal (4167 m), Tichki (3753 m), Tichki (3753 m), Azrou Tamadout (3653 m), Azrou Tamadout (3664 m), Aksoual (3910 m), Bou Iguenouane (3882m)), Inghmar (3892 m). Numerous perennial rivers originate in the Park area, and will ensure irrigation in the valleys and plains of Piedmont. The main ones are, on the northern flank: N'fiss, Rherhaya, Ourika; and on the southern flank: Souss.

Climatologically, its geographical position gives it particular climatic features. The climate there is quite a great diversity. There are bioclimatic zones from the temperate semi-arid, cool to the high mountain bioclimate via the lower humid cool type (according to Emberger). Snow conditions play a very important role in this.

From a botanical point of view, the zonation of vegetation, of the altitudinal type, offers all the levels defined for the Mediterranean zone with the exception of the Infra-Mediterranean, which is also observed in the northern foothills of the chain. Thus, we can observe a succession of vegetation stages ranging, from bottom to top, from the Thermomedean period marked by populations of holm oak and thuja, to the upper level with hemicryptophytic herbaceous plants of the OroMediterranean, passing through other ecosystems with green oak, red juniper and thuriferous, and spiny xerophytes in pads.

In addition to these major types of ecosystems, there are other small plant groups of great biological, biogeographical and ecological interest. Associations colonizing pozzines, cliffs and rocks, river banks, and which show structures and especially flora that are very rich in endemic Moroccan plants or special to the massif, or even elements representing the Eurosiberian flora corresponding to the unique stations present on the southern side of the Mediterranean basin.

Zoologically, the Toubkal National Park is distinguished above all by the presence of the oldest Mouflon reserve in Morocco, the Takhekhort reserve. The breeding avifauna is very diverse and concerns almost a hundred species, with the presence of quite remarkable birds such as the Golden Eagle, the Bonelli's Eagle, the Puss in Boots, the Eagle in Boots, and the Circaète Jean le Blanc. The herpetofauna is directly part of the biological values that the park contains, with a high rate of endemism, and some very rare species such as the Microdactyl Psammodroma and the Schokar's Snake.
