Essaouira archipelago

The site includes an archipelago located 800 m from the shore and coastal dunes. Atlantic coastal site composed of lively and fixed coastal sand dunes (3,000 ha), a small coastal archipelago (30 ha), shallow marine waters, rocky coastlines, sandy beaches and a small mouth of wadi. The importance of this complex comes mainly from its flora (several Macaronesian endemics) and its fauna (rare or endangered birds, endemic reptiles and mammals).

The site plays a major role in the control and prevention of coastal erosion by fixing sand dunes thanks to well-developed vegetation. The site is home to remarkable flora, mainly dune species, in particular: Argania spinosa, Cytisus albidus, Chenolea tomentosa, Genista ferox, Juniperus phoenicea.

Several species of reptiles, amphibians and birds find refuge here: Eleonore's Falcon Falco eleonorae, Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans, Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo ssp.maroccanus.
